Mechanics: Critical Hits, Timing & Luck
Damage is the lifeblood of this game, and crits and timing are the lifeblood of damage. This guide breaks down each of these unspoken rules one by one — more precise than the in-game tutorial.
1. Critical Hits: 3 Matching Symbols, Must Be Adjacent
The rule:
When the reels stop one by one, 3 consecutive adjacent matching symbols = a critical hit (Critical Hit!).
- Example:
Dagger Dagger Dagger Apple Coin→ first 3 in a row = crit ✅ - Example:
Dagger Apple Dagger Dagger Dagger→ last 3 in a row = crit ✅ (adjacency is all that matters, it doesn’t have to start at the first reel) - Example:
Dagger Dagger Apple Dagger Dagger→ no 3 in a row, no crit ❌
Each crit deals base damage × the symbol's crit multiplier and triggers the crit bonus effect (lifesteal, stun, coins ×N, etc.).
Crit multipliers by symbol:
| Multiplier | Symbol |
|---|---|
| ×6 | |
| ×5 | |
| ×4 | Apple, Diamond |
| ×3 | Most attack symbols, Poison Blade, Wooden Shield, Coin Bag |
| ×2 | Massive Blade, Bomb, Spin Blade |
| ×1 | |
| ×1000 |
2. Mega Crit: All 5 Matching, Multiplier ×2 Again
When the reels all stop showing 5 consecutive matching symbols (i.e., every reel landed the same symbol), you trigger a Mega Crit!:
Mega crit damage = base damage × symbol crit multiplier × 2 (megaCriticalMultiplier)
Example: 5 Hammers in a row = (10+10) × 5 × 2 = 200 damage at level 1 — that’s where “5 in a row deletes the enemy” comes from. More reels make 5-in-a-row easier — this is the core reason the Extra Wheel modifier (200 chips) has the highest priority: going from 3 reels to 4 raises the 5-in-a-row odds by an order of magnitude.
3. Skill Checks (Timing): Three Minigames
Some symbols carry a skill check: once the reel stops, a minigame pops up and your performance decides the damage tier. Success = full damage, perfect = crit (×2), failure = reduced damage.
There are three minigame types:
| Type | How it works | Example symbols | Timing window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timing bar | Press while the marker is inside the bar | 0.9-1.5s | |
| Aiming | Press when the marker lines up with the target | Crossbow, Shuriken, Flail | Shuriken: only 0.5-0.65s |
| Spell | Press when the moving ring overlaps | Killing Curse, Healing Spell, Wizards Shield, Explosion | 0.6-1.5s |
The window length is randomized, so the feel differs slightly from run to run. The Shuriken has the shortest window (0.5-0.65s) and is widely considered the hardest symbol to time.
Perfects scale with the Luck modifier: each level of the Luck modifier widens the perfect threshold by 3%, so even players with shaky timing can luck into perfects.
4. Luck: A Built-in Cheat, Starting at 4%
How it works (a hidden rule the game never spells out):
On each spin, if the random roll is lower than your luck value, the next two reels are forcibly overwritten to match the reel that already stopped, effectively handing you a free crit triple.
Luck value = 4% base + 2.5% × Luck modifier level
- At max modifier level (4), luck = 4% + 10% = 14% chance of an automatic crit triple;
- Details: luck only applies from the 2nd fight onward, and only rolls when no other rule is overwriting the reels;
- The Luck modifier costs 35/50/70/50 chips and is the best value-per-chip damage stacker in the late game.
5. Reel Pity: There’s Always a Way
The game has a pity system it never tells you about:
- Your HP >50%: the reels always roll at least 2 attack symbols;
- Your HP ≤50%: the reels always roll at least 4 attack symbols.
That means attack-symbol density spikes when you’re low — combined with timing, comebacks are more likely than they feel. By the same logic, running few pure-attack cards at full HP squeezes the most out of the pity system (pack your reels with utility and the pity still guarantees 2 attack symbols — that’s one of the core ideas behind the Coin build).
6. Critical Respin & Chains
After a crit triggers, the game enters the Critical Respin phase: the reels that already stopped spin again automatically, giving you a shot at chaining another crit. In theory you can respin nearly a hundred times.
Some passive items are built entirely around this mechanic (e.g., Ferocity: a perfect check makes the current reel respin automatically). In practice, the “time a perfect → respin → crit again → respin” loop is where the community’s “delete a boss in one turn” stories come from.
Practical Tips
- Stop reels manually with the spacebar (timing): the symbols keep passing in plain view on the reels, so 10 minutes of practice pays off far more than leaving it to pure random. Even symbols without checks (Hammer, Rusty Dagger) can be timed into triples.
- Stop the edge reels first, then the middle: with 5 reels, stop the first 3 and read the result before deciding how to stop the rest. Since triples only require adjacency, you can “build on what already landed”.
- Don’t panic at low HP: 4 guaranteed attack symbols plus luck overrides mean low HP is actually a great spot to land a comeback crit.
- The Luck modifier + timing builds are a match made in heaven: 14% automatic crits plus a wider perfect window mean even the unluckiest player can feel like they’re on a hot streak — one of the most consistent setups for grinding the Arena late game.
